REUSE 3.0 will serve as an opportunity for non-profit organizations, companies, professionals and aspiring creative talents to showcase their accomplishments in the fields of art, design, photography and more using scrap materials found in Kuwait. The exhibition will be open to the general public from 6pm to 9pm in addition to private school visits from 9am to 1pm.
After successful shows in 2007 and 2008, The en.v initiative (a subsidiary of www.elboutique.com) have teamed up with Zain, a leading mobile telecommunications provider in the Middle East and Africa, to promote greater awareness in Kuwait for the importance and benefits of recycling.
Zain took a lead role in supporting REUSE 3.0 in 2009; ‘We are excited to sponsor REUSE for the second year,’ said Waleed Al-Khashti, Zain’s Corporate Communications and Relations Department Manager in Kuwait.
It is part of Zain’s commitment to support environmental initiatives. Zain’s Kuwait office is a strong supporter of recycling programs and has initiated a range of local projects to generate more awareness of the importance of waste management.
Zahed Al Sultan, managing partner and CEO of The en.v Initiative said: ‘ We feel very enthusiastic about organizing REUSE 3.0 alongside Zain this year, not to mention hosting it at The Avenues. The significant interest shown by youth and companies in participating at REUSE is testament to a growing demand for greater responsibility and action to be taken within our community.’
Global Investment House and Siemens are also amongst the leading companies supporting REUSE 3.0, using the exhibition as a platform to generate awareness for their unique green initiatives.

The British Council is embarking on a large-scale programme in response to the urgent need for future cultural leaders to develop and nurture the necessary skills to drive the cultural sector forward. The international cultural sector is growing rapidly, and in these changing times it plays a unique and vital socio-economic role in all our futures.
CLI aims to develop and nurture a new generation of cultural leaders. Their ambition is to provide opportunities for skills development, create platforms for networking and knowledge-sharing on a national and international level, in order for cultural operators to better lead their organisations and sectors, and inspire an open, tolerant and integrated society.
‘Cultural Leadership’ as a concept holds a strong currency in the UK. Significant government funding in the UK’s Cultural Leadership Programme and other leadership awards and programmes have strengthened the excellence and diversity of the UK’s cultural leadership. In this first year They were pleased to be working in close partnership with the UK’s Cultural Leadership Programme – a cross-sector collaboration between Arts Council England, Creative & Cultural Skills, and Museums, Libraries and Archives Council in the UK whose remit is to support and develop a dynamic and diverse leadership to run organisations of the 21st century. CLI was thus ideally placed to share UK expertise at an international level, while simultaneously generating opportunities for the creation of new, innovative international models and cultural leadership practice.
In order to develop a responsive and flexible programme, they consulted widely in each of the 3 British Council regions involved in CLI’s development year – Near East North Africa, Western Europe & North America, and the Middle East. (Please see ‘Pilot Year’ document for list of participating countries). Between July and November 2008 they held working groups in Brussels, Cairo, London and Muscat, with participants from a range of cultural and higher education organisations. This allowed them to identify needs and priorities in different regions and to assess the ways in which CLI could create effective leadership development tools and facilitate better networking locally, regionally and internationally.
The results of this consultation set the priorities and structure for this pilot year.
Cultural Leadership International –The Pilot Year
In this first year (April 2009 – March 2010) CLI participants were drawn from the countries that took part in the consultation phase. Through a nomination process they invited Expressions of Interest from a small number of candidates who participated in core programme components, as well being provided support to develop and implement their own leadership development plan.
Zahed Sultan was nominated as the sole participant from Kuwait and had to commit to Development Days that took place both in Bahrain in Mid May as well as the London in Mid July.
For the regional Bahrain event, the British Council has developed the concept and content of these days in conjunction with the Cultural Leadership Programme, and UK company People Create, who facilitated the 2 day programme. At the LDD’s participants worked closely together as a group looking at different leadership models and styles, reflected on personal experiences, and began work on Individual Development Plans.
For the international event held in London, participants worked in small groups on a varied programme of learning activities that created a platform for connection to the UK, that further understanding of leadership concepts and provision, and offered an environment for more detailed work on individual development plans.
At the end of the first year the British Council will assess the programme methodology, and expand the scale and geographical remit of the programme. As a programme participant Zahed will be expected to contribute to the evaluation of the programme at different stages.
Further details regarding Zahed Sultan’s individual Development Plan will be disclosed at a later date and upon completion.

Zahed Interviews With Al Yaqaza Magazine
To begin with, introduce yourself to us.
My name is Zahed Sultan Al-Essa. I studied in Kuwait up until the 1990 Iraqi occupation, and then traveled to India for 2 years to continue my studies. Thereafter, I returned to Kuwait and completed my high-school studies, graduating from ASK in 1997. I currently hold a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Boston University (completed in 2001) as well as a diploma in Audio Engineering from the SAE Institute in London (completed in 2004).
Why did you study Sound engineering, and why in Since I was young, I had a passion for music. Upon completion of 14 months at a brick and mortar company in Kuwait (Agility Logistics), I took the decision to travel and study within a new field abroad to alter my career path at the time. The desire to innovate and create was a major driving factor behind this decision.
What did you do when you came back to Kuwait?
On my return, I was enthusiastic and full of ideas. I wanted to work with a variety of creative mediums like music, print, film and more. Furthermore, I interviewed with numerous companies expressing an interest to work with these so-called mediums. But, to my dismay, I was constantly told to focus my efforts. This eventually led me to find creative niche’s in the Kuwaiti market that required professional attention. And so I began my journey freelancing from the bedroom of my parent’s house in 2004.
Initially, did you have the suitable tools to work with these mediums?
Starting out, my tools were simple. It was how I used them and innovated when offered basic tasks that made the difference.
Did you find it difficult to break into a particular field of business, given your young age at the time?
I am pursuant by nature. A bold approach and expression of interest to the smallest task that came my way, allowed me the humility to complete all initial offers, no matter how tedious or simple, and grow at an accelerated rate.
Tell us about your beginnings as a young professional?
I was in constant search for opportunities. Friends, family, and social networking proved to be key to all that I have achieved today.
After 6 months of freelancing out of my bedroom (primarily in the field of audio production and event management – with regards to music). I rented an office with a cousin of mine. In the summer of 2005, I established El Boutique Creative Group (EBCG).
Through this newly formed entity I entered the field of graphic design (and formalized all services related to audio as a separate division as well).
We engaged in a diverse range of creative services and built a substantial portfolio of successes within a short timeframe.
Today, EBCG is home to 11 full-time professionals, 3 part-time, and works with a range of global associates and creatives.
How did social responsibility become a primary area of focus within your organization?
In the summer of 2007, The Metal and Recycling Company (MRC) commissioned EBCG to re-brand their organization. Upon completion of this contract, we were asked to introduce the brand to the local market through a media campaign.
Rather than take the traditional route, we proposed an innovative PR event, whereby we would invite members of the design community, from varying disciplines, to visit MRC’s scrap yards in Amghara, understand their business, collect relevant scrap (within pre-defined specifications) and recreate furniture and home-ware out of it. We entitled this event “REUSE”.
As a first attempt for us to conceptualize and organize an event for the general public, REUSE proved to be a genuine success, from the end products on display to the attendance and overall positive feedback.
More importantly, going through the REUSE experience and interacting with the attendees and the media sparked the idea for “the en.v initiative” and all it’s associated platforms for promoting social responsibility.
The en.v Initiative’s prime objective is to seek out individuals as well as multinational companies in the region, document their efforts, and create interactivity between them towards developing a more thought-conscious society. Using formats that are appealing to the masses, The en.v Initiative strives to develop mediums that entities can utilize as platforms for communicating their social efforts (thus presenting themselves to stakeholders in an entirely new light).
Why did you start a magazine serving Arab society and the environment, and what do you aim to achieve from it?
Our role is a simple one: To further our achievements as a society, as citizens, and as the people of Kuwait. en.v will work, through its various resources, to adopt a multi-lateral action plan that will group and gather together individuals, organizations and corporations with similar goals of philanthropy, sustainability and development to tackle present-day issues like environmental awareness.
At the end of the day, The en.v Initiative strives to instill a social consciousness in Kuwaiti citizens, and the business community alike, that will communicate into the adaptation of responsible, sustainable lifestyles and economical private sector opportunities for the betterment of society as a whole.
What are future plans for EBCG (and en.v)?
As a company and citizens of Kuwait (and the Arab world as a whole) we will constantly be pushing for change. As a collective with a growing sphere of influence, we have a better chance in persuading the highest levels of government to implement decisive and sustainable measures for the betterment of Kuwaiti society in the years to come.

What do you foresee to be the top 3 environmental challenges facing Kuwait? Political instability, a lack of governmental legislation, and legacy PPPs (Public Private Partnerships) that play a reactive role rather than a proactive one.
As an editor of en.v magazine, what role does en.v play in promoting environmental awareness in Kuwait?
What green initiatives does your company take?
El Boutique Creative Group (Our parent company) and The en.v Initiative have gone “carbon neutral”. It was the only logical step forward for us as an organization committed to the environment. As we tried to find creative and efficient ways to reduce our energy use, reuse valuable natural resources, and recycle all kinds of materials; we realized that until technologies can become ‘zero carbon’, we will always have emissions we cannot reduce. That is why the time had come for us to offset our emissions. This will be achieved by investing in carbon mitigation strategies, energy efficiency and renewable energy. We recognize that climate change is a serious threat to our world and in so doing, we will hopefully inspire others to do the same.
Do you believe the “Newair WM” program would help reach your expected environmental goals? (Explain why)
The en.v initiative is an advocate of organizations, big or small, as well as individuals, young and old, that are playing their part in “cleaning up” the mess in which we have left our natural environment. The more companies and citizens demand answers and push for change, the better chance we have as a people in influencing the highest levels of government to implement decisive and sustainable measures for the betterment of Kuwaiti society in the years to come.

The Metal and Recycling Company (MRC), a leading commercial waste management company and Zain Telecommunications Company , the leading mobile telecommunications provider, announced that they would jointly host the REUSE 2.0 recycled art exhibition in Kuwait, under the patronage of his Excellency, the Minister of State for Municipal Affairs, Dr. Fadel Safar.
REUSE 2.0 is a unique event that set to be held for the second consecutive year in Kuwait, and will be hosted at Bayt Lothan in Salmiya district from November 30th to December 2nd 2008. In addition to guest speakers and local professional artists from Kuwait, the exhibit will feature internationally recognized artist Hassan Hajjaj and will serve as an opportunity for aspiring creative talents from various high schools and universities to showcase their accomplishments in the fields of art, design, photography and more. The exhibition will be open to the public from 6pm to 9pm in addition to an allocated time for student trips during 10am to 1pm.
Commenting on this occasion, Omar Tarek Issa, Public Relations Manager at MRC said: ‘The aim behind this exhibition is encouraging the youth to fully comprehend the importance of recycling, since it can produce beneficial material as well as end up being aesthetic decorative paintings.’
‘We at MRC are delighted to be offering recycling solutions, which helps in providing a healthy and safe environment for Kuwait. As part of its corporate social responsibility program, MRC is keen on undertaking a recycling awareness program, addressed through its lectures within Kuwaiti schools,’ added Issa.
MRC operates in three primary sectors, which are waste management and recycling, energy sectors, which focus on oil infrastructure projects, and the industrial sectors.
MRC also supports recycling programmes and has initiated a wide range of local projects to generate more awareness of the importance of waste management. These include the ‘Don’t Throw It, Recycle It’ and the ‘Environment Friends’ campaigns.
Khuloud A. Al-Feeli, Corporate Communications and Relations Department Manager at Zain Mobile Telecommunications Company Kuwait said: ‘The underlying principles of REUSE 2.0 are very much in line with what we are trying to do within Zain Mobile Telecommunications Company here in Kuwait – make the best of what we have in order to minimize waste and help reduce any negative impact that we have on our environment. Large organisations inevitably leave a larger carbon footprint and at we feel strongly about taking decisive positive action to deal with this issue.
Zain was one of the leading companies that took part in the national conservation energy campaign, ‘Tarsheed’, which was promoted throughout different Zain Telecommunications Company
Zain Group buildings and branches. We adopted a plan to minimize electricity and water consumption, as well as the ‘Don’t Throw it, Recycle It’ and the ‘Environment Friends’ campaigns, where thousands of recycled paper bags were distributed throughout Co-ops all over Kuwait, added Al Feeli.’
After the success that was achieved in the first exhibition, which was created by The en.v initiative (a subsidiary of elboutique.com), to raise awareness about the importance of recycling in Kuwait was renewed.
Zahed Al Sultan, managing partner and CEO of The en.v Initiative said: ‘We are delighted to be managing and organizing REUSE 2.0, and to be hosting both MRC and ZAIN. This exhibition unveils the beauty that can result from recycled objects and all of the artists’ artistic products on display will be on sale this year via auction – adding excitement to the exhibition.’
A carbon footprint is a measure of the impact our activities have on the environment, and in particular climate change. It relates to the amount of greenhouse gases produced in our day-to-day lives through burning fossil fuels for electricity, heating and transportation etc.

El Boutique Creative Group (www.elboutique.com) would like to announce the launch of en.v (short for environmentally friendly) – an initiative dedicated to raising awareness about issues relating to social responsibility in the Middle East region.
The en.v Initiative is based in Kuwait with the prime objective of seeking out individuals as well as multinational companies in the region, and documenting their efforts towards creating a more thought-conscious society using formats that are appealing to the masses. Moreover, en.v strives to develop mediums that entities can utilize as platforms for publicizing their social efforts (thus presenting themselves to stakeholders in an entirely new light).
The first platform of The en.v Initiative was the launch of a quarterly bilingual publication for the GCC. This has translated into a strong GCC retail presence as well as distribution agreements with over 40 educational establishments and corporations.
The second platform of The en.v Initiative is an interactive online portal and archiving system to follow by summer’s end. The portal will feature an electronic magazine, audio, video, image libraries as well as numerous functions for users to interact with and share their opinions.
Building on El Boutique’s experience as a branding consultancy, en.v’s third platform is creative advocacy. The en.v Initiative will act as an advocacy and advisory body on social responsibility campaigns, programs and events for various corporations and community-minded organizations.
Additionally, it is with great pride and pleasure that the El Boutique Creative Group and The en.v Initiative announce that both entities are officially going carbon neutral – among the first in its respective fields to do so in the region.
With this corporate pledge, El Boutique Creative Group and en.v reviewed, under consultation of an external audit agency, all its day-to-day corporate activities; and committed to do its best to reduce, reuse and recycle. Given the unavoidable obstacles to maintaining a wholly sustainable organization, all damage that is inflicted on the environment will be offset by investing in regional carbon neutral projects.
